I get a 'No Dial Tone' error when I try to use my Modem

How prevent the modem from making a screeching noise on dial out?

How do I prevent my PC prefixing a number for an outside line to the number dialled?

How do I remove the virgin icon from the desktop?

How can I test to see whether my modem driver is installed correctly?

I get a 'No Dial Tone' error when I try to use my Modem

Make sure you have correctly connected the Modem to your phone line.

Make sure that the phone cable is plugged into the 'line' socket on the modem and not the phone socket.

How can I prevent the modem from making a screeching noise on dial out?

The following AT commands can be entered in HyperTerminal to quieten the modem:
ATM0       mute speaker
AT&F1     reset modem
Alternatively you can set these commands to operate permanently by going to control panel>phone and modem settings>modem>double click your modem in the list>advanced and enter the commands in the 'extra initialisation commands box'.

How do I prevent my PC prefixing a number for an outside line to the number dialled?

In order to prevent a number for an outside line being prefixed to the numbers that the PC dials go to control panel (choose classic view)> open the phone and modem options icon, double click any dialling locations in the list and make sure that neither of the 'to access an outside line for . . ' boxes are ticked.

How do I remove the virgin icon from the desktop?

To remove the virgin icon from the desktop go to control panel>display>desktop and click customise desktop. If the Virgin icon is not listed try removing the internet explorer icon (the virgin icon is an IE icon in disguise!) or use the clean desktop icon.

How can I test to see whether my modem driver is installed correctly?

1) Try using phone dialler to call your mobile or the speaking clock (start>programs>accessories>communications>phone dialler) 2) Go to control panel>modems>diagnostics, highlight the com port your modem is connected to and press more info, if you see a list of AT commands then the modem drivers are working correctly.
